Backyard Youth Theatre belongs to young people and their neighborhoods who use creative theater arts and cultural exchange to create fun, equitable and empowered communities.

Our Vision

We envision a world where youth have positive self identities and celebrate differences in order to collaborate locally and globally to create equitable and sustainable neighborhoods.

Our Core Values

As a company we believe creativity, accountability and community are essential to cultivating brave spaces where youth feel valued and supported. We bring these core values into every meeting, project, and program we engage in. 

• Creativity is the innately human ability to discover our unique identities through self expression. Creativity allows for new possibilities and fosters imaginations that can dream up new worlds and empower young people to shape the realities they want to live in. 

• Accountability is a vital step in creating equitable communities. By taking responsibility for our actions, we can become aware of how our unique parts affect the whole. And from awareness comes a potential for deeper empathy and courage.  

• BYT would not exist without the incredible Community that has supported us through many years in the backyard. We believe in the one room schoolhouse concept, where people of all ages can learn from each other.
